Reunions by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
Reunions - Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit is rated 5 Stars by The Yellow Café
The Yellow Café Album Of The Week is Reunions by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
Released on 15th May 2020, the seventh studio album by country rock singer/songwriter Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit features ten truly brilliant songs. From start to finish Reunions has that unmistakeable sound and familiar excellence that has carried through Jason Isbell’s previous albums. It welcomes you into this new album with open arms. Our favourite track from this album is ‘Dreamsicle’ a stunning, reflective song about growing up, often moving home, an absent father and heartache. It’s packed full of emotion that took our breath away the first time we heard it.
“Broken glass and broken vows
I'll be 18 four years from now
With different friends in a different town
I'll finally be free
Call you both some holiday
Tell you why I moved away
Say, "Everything’s gonna be okay
You can come see me."
Reunions is an absolute masterpiece and, without a doubt, a standout album of 2020.
In a press release announcing the album, Isbell says: “There are a lot of ghosts on this album. Sometimes the songs are about the ghosts of people who aren’t around anymore, but they’re also about who I used to be, the ghost of myself. I found myself writing songs that I wanted to write fifteen years ago, but in those days, I hadn’t written enough songs to know how to do it yet. Just now have I been able to pull it off to my own satisfaction. In that sense it’s a reunion with the me I was back then.”
The ghosts he spoke of are evident throughout the album, but in such a way that they could be our ghosts or your ghosts, not just Jason’s. This album is a beautiful emotional journey of self-exploration, expression and reflection for everyone who listens to it. We’ve had the album on repeat in our Locked Down Yellow Café HQ and it has been an absolute dream to listen to. We close our eyes and we’re mentally driven down a long open road, blasting this album at full volume with the sun in on our faces and the wind in our hair. Give the album a listen and see where it takes you!
